There are a number of reasons why we put links in blog posts. Firstly, to provide the reader with more information on a word or topic that we are writing about. Secondly, we may want to direct the reader to a previous blog post that was written that will further expand on the current blog post or reference what we are talking about. Thirdly, we want the reader to click on a product link that may be an affiliate link to encourage them to make a purchase that makes us a commission, or a direct product we have for sale. The last category of links is a sponsored link. They can sometimes be tracked links, where the company that has paid for the link to be included wants to monitor the number of click-throughs we get to measure their return on their investment. They aren’t always like this, but I have done several campaigns like this, and it does cause a mini panic, thinking that no one is going to click and you won’t get return work from them.
So, now we know why we want click-throughs on our links, the question is, how do we get more click-throughs for our links in blog posts? This can be achieved in a variety of ways, and you want to look at implementing most of them to maximise your chances. Just sticking links in wherever and whenever is not a good strategy.
Getting more click-throughs for your links can be achieved by implementing several strategies, including:
- Writing compelling headlines and descriptions: Make sure the headline and description accurately reflect the content of the linked page and entice users to click.
- Using visuals: Adding images or videos to accompany your link can increase the chances of getting clicks.
- You can also link your images, just click on the image in your editor and add the link, then when they click on the image, they will be directed to your link page.
- Segmenting your audience: Personalise your messaging and offerings based on the interests of your audience to increase relevance and engagement. This is a fancy way of saying niche down so that your audience is already interested in what you have to say and offer.
- Creating a sense of urgency: Encourage users to act quickly by highlighting limited-time offers or exclusive content.
- Offering exclusive or valuable content: Offer content that is not readily available elsewhere to incentivize clicks.
- Building trust: Ensure that users trust the source of the link and the linked content.
- Make the link visible: Use a different colour for your links, or underline them or make them bold to make them stand out from the rest of the content.
- Optimizing for mobile devices: Make sure your links are easily clickable on mobile devices, as more and more people access the internet via their smartphones.
- Testing and refining: Regularly test and refine your approach to determine what works best for your specific audience.
It’s also important that you know what you want out of the reader clicking the link. Is it more affiliate sales or more traffic, for example? Remember, the key to getting more click-throughs is to provide value to the user and to make it clear what they will get out of clicking the link.
