Using SVG files for your craft project

If you’re a blogger you know how you can make money by writing, but there are also other income streams to consider. One of them is creating and selling products. Think about it – you already have an audience right there who if you have done it right are a niche audience and they already know, like and trust you. They are perfect to sell your products to. But what to sell? Some bloggers go generic and sell T-shirts, mugs, tote bags, key rings, sweatshirts and things like that. Others go more niche and start a small business based on wax melts for example. Today we’re going to talk about making your own merchandise using svg files.

What are SVG files?

SVG stands for Scalable Vector Graphic, and this means that the graphics can be scaled to various sizes without any reduction to the quality. You can then download them and use them for digital cutting machines such as a Silhouette or Cricut to create stunning projects instantly. Those beautiful pantry labels people are going crazy for? They’re made from SVG files and a circuit machine, all done mostly by Mums like you in their own home.

You aren’t limited to use SVGs on paper alone, you can also use them on many other materials such as vinyl leather, felt and cotton; it all depends on the capabilities of your machine. The best thing about them is that they never become pixelated no matter how much they are altered like standard JPEG or PNG files.

SVG cut files can be used by crafters and bloggers to make your tote bags, shirts, mugs, handmade gifts and much more.

Who can use SVG files?

Basically, anyone! I have used them for all of my logos so that no matter what size they are the quality remains the same. Once you have them in this format you could use them in the future if you wanted to have your logo printed onto your merchandise or on business cards, headed paper etc. If you’re a crafter and are doing it for your own pleasure, you can use them for all your crafting projects – making labels, making handmade gifts and fashion statements.

Here are some examples of what you can make with your cutting machine and your SVG files.

How about a Mommy and me garment business? Once you have your cutting machine you can set it to make sticky labels or iron on labels, so you’d choose iron on labels for these and then press them on to the T shirt. There are many YouTube tutorials if you aren’t sure. Let’s see what else you could make:

How about personalised Christmas decorations? You can get templates like the one above especially for baubles. For my parenting blog, I focus on pregnant and new mums, so I could make baby’s first Christmas baubles for my audience. If yours is a pet blog you could make cat and dog paw prints for example. It’s all about listening to your audience. Do you belong to any large Facebook groups that would love your products? Then you have a ready-made group to sell to.

All those wall stickers you can buy, they’re all made with a cutting machine and svg cuts! I bet you didn’t know that. You can have the designs cut onto vinyl for removable wall decals, onto any home decor item, metal and glass.
